What the Red Spot in an Egg Really Means

 

1. It’s Natural — Not Dangerous

The red or brownish spot you sometimes see on the yolk (or white) is called a blood spot.

It forms when a tiny blood vessel in the hen’s ovary or oviduct ruptures during egg formation.

It’s completely natural and happens occasionally, especially in farm-fresh or unfiltered eggs.

 

 

2. It’s Safe to Eat

The egg is still perfectly safe to eat.

You can remove the spot with the tip of a knife if you prefer — but it doesn’t affect the taste or nutrition.
