Pregnancy, menopause, or hormone therapy can affect blood circulation and the condition of blood vessels, causing veins to appear in places where they were not previously noticeable.
When can the appearance of veins be a cause for concern?
Although in many cases it is a harmless change, there are situations in which visible veins can indicate a more serious problem:
1️⃣Sudden onset without a clear cause
If you haven’t lost weight, started a new exercise regimen, or been exposed to any obvious triggers, and you suddenly notice new, bulging, or twisted veins, it could be a sign of circulatory problems.
2️⃣Pain, swelling, or redness
Veins accompanied by pain, swelling, redness, or a feeling of warmth can be a symptom of inflammation of the vein (phlebitis) or even deep vein thrombosis – a condition that requires immediate medical intervention.
3️⃣Rigid or “rope-like” veins
When a vein feels hard or like a taut rope under the skin, it may be related to varicose veins or superficial thrombophlebitis, a condition in which a clot forms in a vein located near the surface.
