Changes in the nipple can also be an early warning sign:
sudden sinking inward
Unusual discharge
itching
flaking or irritation around the areola
While similar symptoms can also be caused by benign conditions, any change that lasts more than a few weeks requires medical evaluation.
Experts are categorical: any visible or tangible change that does not subside deserves attention.
Swelling without a palpable lump
One of the lesser-known early signs is swelling of the breast or in the armpit area without a clearly formed lump.
The malignant process can begin in deeper tissues or lymph nodes, making it difficult to detect by self-palpation.
Some people notice:
gradual change in the size of one breast
Shape difference
feeling of fullness under the armpit
Because these changes develop slowly, they are often attributed to age, weight changes, or hormonal fluctuations.
However, unexplained swelling — especially when it affects only one side — can be an important early signal.
