The entire internet tried to figure it out, but they couldn’t. I’m not sure either; 90% of people don’t know either…
Clackers, also known as Lik-Klaks, were popular in the 1970s and remain a favorite among vintage toy collectors. The toy consists of two plastic balls connected by a string. Swinging them produces a loud “clack” sound.
The toy was invented in 1969 by the Wham-O company. This company was also responsible for other popular toys such as the hula hoop, the frisbee, and the Superball. Clackers were so popular that the company sold over 10 million in its first year.
This item was later banned in many areas for safety reasons. Some plastic balls broke, causing splinters and injuries to children. The company later produced a new version of the toy, made from a safer material, but it never achieved the popularity of the original.
Clackers toys remain popular with collectors and those who remember playing with them as children. An old toy is a reminder of a simpler time, and those lucky enough to own a pair still enjoy them.
