Light or grayish stools

 

 

 

Cause: The liver produces bile, which helps break down fats and gives stools their characteristic brown color. In cases of liver failure (e.g., due to a tumor or obstruction of the bile ducts), bile flow may be reduced or even completely blocked. This results in pale, clay-colored, or even almost gray stools.

 

What it looks like: Stools are noticeably lighter than usual—almost chalky—and may float in water or appear greasy.
